What a dryer vent installation actually involves
First the route gets picked. Shortest path wins, with the fewest elbows. We measure from the dryer's exhaust collar to the nearest exterior wall or roof line. Then the hole. Stucco gets cored, not hammered. Siding gets cut and flashed. Rigid galvanized pipe goes in next, joints pointed in the direction of airflow, seams taped instead of screwed. Screws catch lint. The hood or roof cap mounts last, sealed at the perimeter, and we run the dryer to confirm the flapper swings free.
Where the run goes depends on the house. Postwar single-story homes with garage laundry usually get a short lateral through stucco. Three-story townhomes and Palos Verdes hillside homes with laundry below grade need a long vertical to a roof cap. Raised 1920s-40s beach bungalows often route under the floor through the crawlspace. Dingbat and courtyard apartments from the 1960s-70s share an interior corridor path out to a side wall.
Two things we refuse to install: white vinyl or foil transition duct, and any exterior hood with a screen in it. Screens trap lint fast. Near the water, plain steel louvers corrode and stick open, which invites birds and rodents.
